Understanding the new Queensland Fire & Safety Legislation?:
As of January 2008 a
new legislation was put into place in
regards to signage, evacuation plans and instructional records. This legislation states that:
"every place of business in Queensland must be compliant with the Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008"
The building occupier (business owner) is responsible for this compliance, not the building owner.
With the introduction of this new legislation, the Queensland Government allowed every building occupier until 1
st July 2009 to put this compliancy in place. From this point on:
"businesses found not to be compliant with the new legislation are subject to fines of up to $5000 per breach"
Is Your Business in Breach of the New Legislation?
To be compliant with the new Fire and Safety Legislation businesses are required to have the following:
- A Fire Safety Management Plan.
- Effective Evacuation Plan Signage, which must include:
- “You Are Here” markings
- Evacuation routes to the nearest exit(s)
- Fire safety equipment locations
- Accurate scaling and correct orientation based on the location of each sign
- Evacuation procedures and instructions
- A proposed Training Program for residents and/or staff for fire management and prevention, and emergency evacuation.
- A copy of the building plans identifying the location of the prescribed fire safety installations.
- The correct Exit Door Hardware.
